Just throwing this out to the forum for some discussion/feedback. When you hear or see the word "custom" attached to a firearm what thoughts go
through your mind? Sal (Armoando) and I recently discussed the virtues of the Ruger Red Label over/under shotgun. I had some smithing done to it to bring the
trigger up to an acceptable, predictable level. The barrels are ported and a recoil pad installed. While all these items are nice, I in no way consider it
"custom." When you look at a Perazzi that right out of the box is smoother, better balanced and shoots like a dream (although it does cost
substantially more). I, over the years have seen "custom" 1911's that are so tricked out that in competition one miss-step will ruin that
competitors day (failure to feed, stovepipe, etc). I guess I have always been the conservative type and want 100% reliability and dependability in my firearms.
Sure, sexy good looks are important (nice wood and finish on the stock etc) but they only come in a close second. To me a true "custom" gun starts it
life fitted out to one particular customer. Caliber or gauge, stock (length of pull, trigger tension etc). Then the gunsmith goes to town producing a one of
kind work or art for that particular customer. Usually with a huge price tag at the end of it. Thanks and everyone be safe this hunting season!
