Anyone heard of this fertilizing method?

Posts: 17 06/09/09 4:18	Tags : None I was having a casual conversation with my Father about his garden and how he gets it to grow so good every year. Apparently, he has one of his buddies that works at a really good golf course bring him loads of grass clipings from the fairways and works it in the ground. He said that the grass has lots of fertilizer in it and is great for the soil. One, has anyone else ever heard of this? Second, if this does work, would it be a good idea for us to use with our food plots and just work it in the soil?

Posts: 518 06/09/09 5:56	It works, I have been doing this for about 5 years in my garden now. I used to have a hard clay soil in the garden but now it is a nice loamy soil. And i don't need to add chemical fertilizers anymore. What I do is let my grass get tall before I mow it then all the clippings go into the rows in my garden, they help keep down the weeds all summer then in the fall I till them into the dirt along with all of the leaves that I can collect. Posts: 518 09/06/09 11:20	Here is this years garden, I just took these pics with my new camera. In this pic you can see how much the grass clippings help keep down the weeds. I put clippings on the right side of this Swiss Chard, and nothing on the left side, amazing how many weeds grow without the clippings! Here is a shot of clippings between the rows of tomato's Once the garden is all harvested I will rototill all the clippings and as many leaves as I can gather down into the soil, by spring they will be broke down into usable nutrients for next years veggies. Posts: 136 09/20/09 10:27	Any organic material will help lighten the soil but it takes about 7 years for nitrogen in it to become usable to plants. I use the clippings the same way as brown its down with the same results. It sure beats weeding!
