6.5 X 55 Swede ? |

I just picked up an old (1901) sporterized mauser
to try this caliber out. Have been reading alot about
this caliber and it sounds to me like an excellent deer
round. It will also become my daughter's first rifle for
hunting big game. If it works out like I think it will,
I'll look for a new rifle for myself in this chambering.
Just curious if any of you use it, like it or hate it.

I bought a Rem. 788 in .243 for my kids to use for
deer and pronghorn. It has killed a few of each but I do
not like the way it doesn't exit and leave a blood trail.
I wish I had got a 6.5 X 55 and I may yet pic one
up.
I have heard nothing but good things about it. (one of the more popular moose rounds in Eur Robinope) |

I looked at the 243 too Duffy, great little
cartrige but I wanted to try something with a better
ability to penetrate as you mentioned. I tried it out
yesterday with 140 Federal power shocks on paper. Very
pleased with the accuracy, it's also a real pleasure to
shoot compared the the '06. Hopefully I can find a wolf
or coyote to try it on now.

After using this caliber for 2 seasons- 2 mule deer, 2 whitetails, 1 bear & 1 cow elk have hit the ground. On broadside(heart/lung) shots on deer I have
only had pass through's. This year the wt was shot at about 30 yds facing me. He was in a sneak position & hit him at the top of the throat patch. The
bullet didn't hit bone, passing along the spine and stopping next to it at the 3rd last rib. Penetration was over 20 inches. The cow elk was a neck shot
that dropped her where she stood. It has proven to be a very effective without excessive bloodshot.
