I am thinking of planting corn this year. Maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 acre. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

as soon as it emerges from the ground. Then if it survives the deer eat it as a salad when its young. After all that you might get a small crop that will be diviored by every critter in the woods!! Ed the guru recommends that you don't plant corn in a wooded area. I would also agree with him. Plant something that will give you more protien per acre than corn. There are a lot of plants that will lost longer and provide you with a longer food source well into the winter!! You can try something like purple top turnips mixed in with some rape and some rye/clover. Corn is nice but once the cob is gone all you have is stalks that they don't eat!!! The buck oats did fine in th same area. I did plant a few rows of turnips in between the corn that provided a lot of food for the deer in the area. They showed signs of even bedding down in the corn at night and eating the turnips next to there beds!! |
