I got my buck in the U.P. at our Deer camp in Ontanogon County. We hunt on National Forest Reserve, so it is public land. I was reading a magazine about flintlock muzzleloaders had 2 deer at the feeding station, a doe and a small button buck, every now and than I would look up and see what my 2 pets were doing. All of a sudden they took off, I didnt think much of it because the doe was very nervous and they had done the same thing the day before. I kept reading and watching about 5 mintues after they took off I see a deer trotting in, saw the rack and proceeded to throw my magazine on the floor, yank the window out of the blind, and shove the rifle out the window, this is a matter of 5-7 seconds. He was broadside to start with, when I got the crosshairs on him the saftey came off and I sent a Dr. Doug's 110gr pain pill his way. His front legs planted and his rear legs kicked straight out, he turned 90 degrees and ran straight away, I was about to give him another when he tipped over in full stride. The shot was 42 yards, he ran about 60 yards so 100 yard drag wasnt that bad. When I gutted him I pulled his heart out three peices, tracking was easy as I saw him tip over, but there would have been enough blood to track him if I hadnt.
After I had everything done with dressing and taggin I walked the 1.2 miles to my dad to tell him I shot a small 6 point. We B.S.ed for a minute I told him how it all played out, about 10 minutes of B.S's I said "if you think I walked this far to tell you about a 6 point your are crazy I shot a big F*&%ing 9 point"
The rifle is my 6.8 SPC I built it earlier this year, and the ammo was handloaded 110gr V-Max at about 2650 fps, if I ever have kids that have an intrest in hunting they will be shooting a 6.8 SPC probably not an AR-15 but probably a Remington Bolt rifle, the round is amazing no recoil, not extremely loud and perfectly capable of taking deer out to 350 yards if needed.
I cant see paying some one top dollar to have him mounted but if anyone know some that is good and does it on the cheap...if not I am doing a European Skull mount and selling the hide to a local fur buyer.
I did see 2 big black wolves and there were plenty of others seeing wolves also.
